December 1 – December 10, 2023
The Nguon festival is the signature event for the Bamoun people. Ever since the original King of the Bamoun people migrated from the Tikar plains, this festival has been a celebration of harvest and then of war!! The festival takes place every two years.
The festival commemorated times past when the Bamoun warriors would go to war and return with their war trophies. It is also a true example of democracy as the Sultan abdicates the throne, stands before his people as a man and not a King to be judged by the members of the Secret Society. The outcome of the ceremony is that either the King remains on the throne or he is forced out.
This festival is attended by many Bamoun Diaspora members including those from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. We will also visit the Tikar of Bankim, who are the Ancestors of the Bamoun as well as many of the Bamileke villages in Cameroon today.
