African Naming Ceremony

[youtube_sc url=”https://youtu.be/-68Uc2nyztU” title=”African%20Naming%20Ceremony”]

We gathered at the edge of Rock Creek Park early Saturday morning each of us in our own thoughts as we walked through the path that would lead us to the stream where we would finally receive the names our ancestors were denied when they were forced to travel those many hundreds of years ago away for the only home they knew to a new and foreign land.

The group was led by His Majesty, Chief Emmanuel Ndoumbe of Bonendale, Cameroon. Bonendale is located in Douala, Cameroon.

We each traveled from North Carolina, Maryland, Georgia, New York, Connecticut, Detroit, and Washington DC to attend this event. In addition, we had diaspora representatives from Tanzania, Nigeria, Cameroon, Senegal and Guinea.  Our special guest was King Happi V the King of Bana located in Cameroon. Bana is a Bamileke village located in West Cameroon.

During the slave trade, many Africans were stripped of their identity upon landing in the Americas. It is our hope that all Africans in the Diaspora interested in reclaiming their African Heritage through a traditional name are given the opportunity.
